SCHOOL of Management Colloquium (5): Online Seminar by Professor Sam Oh of SungKyuKwan University

At 1:00 p.m. on December 16, 2020, Professor Sam Oh of Sungkyunkwan University was invited to give a wonderful online seminar titled “Topic Maps and Ontology Design Methodology”. More than 80 students and faculty members attended the seminar.

In the Seminar, Professor Oh introduced the core concepts of the ontology language of topic maps. The language is an ISO standard, which contains the design method of a complete ontology. In his seminar, Professor Sam mainly discussed the concepts, development method, and development specification of ontology, providing audience with a basic understanding of ontology and its development and laying a solid foundation for its in-depth research and application. He also led the audience to jointly develop a sample ontology, which showed the whole process of ontology development in detail.

Sam Oh is a professor of the Seongkyungwan University (SKKU) and an associate professor of the University of Wisconsin School of Engineering. Before joining the SKKU, Professor Oh taught at the University of Wisconsin for four years as an assistant professor. His teaching and research interests include data modeling, metadata, ontology, data analysis, and knowledge management. He has extensive consulting experiences working with Korean businesses and the government. He has chaired management committees of both iSchool International and DCMI. He has presided over the TC46/SC9 for six years and the ISO/IEC JTC1 SC34 for nine years. He has also taught intelligence and data courses in universities such as the University of Syracuse, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
